2nd Annual Des Moines Walk To "Break the Silence" On Ovarian Cancer Scheduled Saturday, May 9, 2009

Proceeds Help Raise Disease Awareness to Foster Early Diagnosis and Increase Survival Rates

DES MOINES, Iowa (March 2009) - Help create some noise and join the Iowa Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) in its 2nd Annual “Break the Silence” walk on Saturday, May 9, 2009, in Des Moines to raise funds, generate awareness and increase survival rates.

One of a number walks to promote an ongoing nationwide awareness campaign, the Des Moines walk will be held at Gray’s Lake (between Fleur Drive and George Flagg Parkway).  There will be a short opening ceremony, including a group survivor photo taking place approximately at 9 a.m., with the walk stepping off at 9:30 a.m. sharp.  This year’s two mile walk is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants, including more than 30 ovarian cancer survivors, their families, friends and supporters.

“Ovarian cancer is 90 percent curable if diagnosed in Stage 1 of the disease, which makes awareness and education key to increasing survival rates,” said Mandy Griffin, walk committee chairperson, NOCC Iowa Chapter.  “The NOCC’s ‘Break the Silence’ campaign was created specifically to help generate ovarian cancer awareness on both a local and national level, and regional walks such as these play a significant role in NOCC’s efforts.”

Ovarian cancer will claim more than 15,000 lives this year and more than 20,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease.  All walk proceeds fund education and awareness on both a local and national level.
