NOCC AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF OVARIAN CANCER AT LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP'S SUNRISE WALK
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) is a proud sponsor of the Sunrise Walk, a 10,000 step journey along the cart path of Locust Hill Country Club, sight of the LPGA Championship presented by Wegman’s.
600 participants are expected to attend the Sunrise Walk at 6:00 am on Wednesday, June 23. The Walk will be followed by a healthy breakfast and a presentation on ovarian cancer by the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Speakers will include LPGA player Heather Bowie Young, who lost her grandmother to the disease.
“The NOCC is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the LPGA in educating women about ovarian cancer,” said David Barley, NOCC’s Chief Executive Officer. “It is especially important to talk to people who are already interested in a healthy lifestyle. All too often, women assume that if they eat right, exercise, and visit their doctors regularly, they will not get ovarian cancer. While a healthy lifestyle certainly helps, it does not mean one is immune to the disease. Education and awareness of ovarian cancer can be life-saving.”
Last year, over 20,000 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and approximately 15,000 women died from the disease. There is no early screening test, and therefore most cases are diagnosed late, when prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed in its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is over 90%. Recognizing the symptoms of ovarian cancer is key to early diagnosis.
Symptoms of ovarian cancer can include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, urinary frequency or urgency, and trouble eating or feeling full quickly. Women are encouraged to visit their doctors if these symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, or if these symptoms are new to them.
The mission of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) is to raise awareness and increase education about ovarian cancer. The Coalition is also committed to improving the quality of life for women with ovarian cancer.
